A Referendum On Bad Policies
As the dust settles on last night’s stirring victory by Scott Brown in Massachusetts, two things are clear. This election was a referendum on bad policies under consideration by Congress and a repudiation of the Democrat’s liberal agenda. How these two concerns play out over the next few weeks and months are yet to be seen but it is safe to say that the tone of the national conversation has changed.
Brown has been very vocal on how he would be the 41st vote against healthcare and that certainly was a message that resonated in the hearts of many voters, especially the independents. A survey released this morning show that 78% of the independents that voted for Brown are against the healthcare bill. So for anyone to suggest that this was not about healthcare just do not want to face the true facts of the situation.
But actually, the results of the election was not because of a single issue, but rather about many other things that Obama and the Democrat Congress has been pushing in the first twelve months. Here is how I would surmise the reasons that Massachusetts voters repudiated Obama and gave Brown the victory.
- bad policy – The Democrats totally misread their mandate and used the once in a lifetime opportunity of majorities in both houses to attempt a cram down of one bad policy after another. It became clear that their goal was more about ideology and not what was best for the American people. Besides the healthcare bill, with this vote the American people rejected cap and trade, immigration reform, net neutrality and other radical legislative agenda items.
- bailouts and stimulus bills that don’t work – Over the last twelve months we have had bank bailouts, auto company bailouts, insurance company bailouts, a stimulus bill that did not create any new jobs, talk of a second stimulus bill, and other financial policy that Americans have rejected.
- government takeover – It began with the auto companies and left unfettered, it’s hard to imagine what else this administration may have pursued. For Americans who yearn for freedom and free markets, the idea that the government could step in and take over a company was very difficult to consider. Add to that, a pay czar that can regulate pay in private companies and many people thought we were starting to look like Russia or Venezuela.
- expansion of czars – Though our government as structured in the Constitution is not perfect, it still is the best form of government ever defined in history. Americans were comfortable with the separation of powers as provided by the Constitution and have always felt secure that these separation of powers left the individual in power. The expansion of the use of czars, many of which were not approved by Congress, and the remaining questions about what their role really is in this administration, have left many Americans worrying if the framework as defined by the founders is secure.
- special interests – Very few administrations have been as blatant as the Obama administration about paybacks to the special interests. Whether it’s the payback to unions for the cadillac tax on healthcare, or to the trial lawyers on tort reform, or the bribes and payoffs to Senators for their votes, it was apparent that this administration put politics over principle. Americans are sick of these backroom deals that are only intended to payoff the special interests.
- government waste – Billions of dollars unaccounted for, huge pay raises to government employees, weekly parties at the White House – Americans are hurting and this administration and Congress have been tone deaf to the pain that we are feeling. The people are saying enough is enough, it’s time to get the house in order and become more conservative with government spending.
President Obama had a once in a lifetime opportunity and could have implemented a long term liberal agenda that would be difficult to ever erase. But instead of moving slowly and doing it incrementally, the administration stepped on the pedal and tried to ram everything through all at once. They took the position that “we won” and rubbed it in America’s face. Although they thought they understood the mandate of the 2008 election, history will show that they badly misread The Mood of The American People. As a result, the American people have said ‘f’ you, and the result of this election is that this was a referendum on bad policies by this adminsitration.
“After all, if the people of Massachusetts can send a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat Ted Kennedy had a lock on for 47 years, then the revolution has indeed begun.” Source: Boston Herald
Keep up the fight good conservative patriots. We have turned the corner and this election has the Democrats running scared. Let’s keep the pressure on them and make sure we keep them running, right out of office.
