A Sudden Shift To The Middle

Rep. Patrick Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, Obama,...

On Tuesday night the whole Democrat agenda came to a screeching halt with the election of one very unordinary State Senator from Massachusetts named Scott Brown. His victory came out of nowhere and instantly changed the political landscape. And suddenly, with this one election, Democrats now need support from Republicans for anything they want to pass.

Just a few days ago the Democrats were marching to nationalized healthcare and had many other liberal agenda items lined up for passage. These included card check, cap and trade, amnesty for illegal immigrants, more bailouts and who knows what else that might be on their list. But after Tuesday night all of these look to be at risk and Obama’s administration waits to be redefined for the first time where he does not have a super majority and where he will have to work across the aisle.

Elections have their consequences and the Massachusetts special election is one shining example of that old adage! It was assumed that the Democrats would hold on to this Senate seat in the bluest of all states, that had been held by Ted Kennedy for 47 years. Brown, who ran on a common sense conservative platform, caught everyone by surprise and won by five points in an election that he trailed by 20+ points only a month before.

Now the Democrats are left without their super majority in the Senate and all of their agenda items are at risk without support from at least one Republican. But the question is, why should any Republican want to help the Democrats after being completely shut out of all legislative process over the last twelve months? Any Republican that appears to do so will be met with unrelenting pressure from conservatives. So the Democrats will be left one vote short for any legislation they propose.

And now even the moderate or blue-dog Democrats are feeling empowered with the Brown win, stepping away from the strong armed tactics from inside their own party. Since Brown’s victory, some two dozen Democrats have come out vocally against the White House and asked them to step back on their aggressive liberal agenda.

It’s probably too late for many Democrats in Congress. Their arrogance to the American people and the special deals they cut along the way have left deep marks with many voters. Many long term registered Democrat voters who supported this administration initially have seen enough and are poised to vote these bums out when the midterm elections come around in November. There’s just too much water under the bridge for voters to forget.

So what we will be seeing is a major shift politically to the middle. Current members of Congress know they have to move to the middle if they have any chance of survival. New candidates will be running on a platform of change, but not the same type of change that we have seen in the last twelve months. Now the Democrats are on defense and Republicans can use the change mantra to push America back to a center-right country politically.
